Internet is a global network of computers each computer connected to the internet must have a unique address. Internet addresses are in the form nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn where nnn must be a number from 0 - 255. This address is known as an IP address. (IP stands for internet protocol). Data travels  across the internet in packets. Each packet can carry up to 1500 bytes. Electronic signals take about 13 ms to travel the earth. You can add a factor of 1.5 or so because signals in optical fiber travel slower than signals in the air, another increase because signals aren’t routed in straight lines.
